Aged Care in Perth WA, Respite Care

When I arrived in Australia more than 25 years ago, from the Philippines, it would never have occurred to me that one day I would become the founder Career Carer.

I was helping my in-laws on the weekends with a bit of cooking and grooming when Morris had a stroke and could no longer look after Judith. She was living in a retirement village and her only desire was to remain in her own home and avoid going into the adjacent nursing home.    

I gave up running my businesses of  Auctioneering, buying & selling of gold/ diamond and pay -day lending, to help care for Judith on a 24/7 basis.
_By helping look after my mother-in-law, for several years, I got an experience in the care of a Self Funded Retiree who usually received little, if any, Government support.

I attended all visits to GP, Geriatrician and other specialists including several long stays in the private hospitals for treatments.

Judith failed the means test and was not entitled to any in home care except when she had wounds or injuries that were well attended by Silver Chain, at minimal cost.

Her memory had deteriorated to the point that she could not be left alone so that my husband or I had to remain with her 24/7. There were mobility issues that in the end necessitated the use of a device to lift her from her bed into a wheelchair etc.

To provide better care I undertook courses in First Aid & Certificate III in Aged Care.

Our biggest problem was that we could not have a break to take our daughter on holidays. We rang all the aged care agencies in the Yellow Pages and they quoted in excess of $5000 for a week for   a person to be full time with Judith.
_That was $30 an hour but the real problem was that the carers worked shifts and agencies could not guarantee the same carer for most of the time. This would have been an impossible situation for Judith to have more than 1 or 2 people in her home, that she had not known for ages.

We resolved to one day open a facility so that families who could afford to care for their aged parents, could have some RESPITE, or time off.
